What/Where is Bribie Island?
A sand island barrier enclosing a lagoon very like Mangawhai, sheltering Caloundra, (100km north of Brisbane) & Pumicestone Passage
Caloundra (c100,000 people): start of the Sunshine Coast & a major holiday centre
Pumicestone Passage inside Bribie enters Moreton Bay 44km south, providing small boat navigation, recreation, & ecological services
Decades of erosion have reduced the resilience of Bribie’s northern spit;
Two recent breaches: 2022 - TC Seth and 2025 - TC Alfred
Caloundra navigation channel closed
The Problem:Changing tide, wave, and sand conditions are reshaping the Passage; coastal erosion and inundation threats, rising and sand shoals make navigation hazardous.
