Lessons from the Bribie Island breach for the Mangawhai Spit

  • Dec 14, 2025
  • 1 min read

What/Where is Bribie Island?

  • A sand island barrier enclosing a lagoon very like Mangawhai, sheltering Caloundra, (100km north of Brisbane) & Pumicestone Passage

  • Caloundra (c100,000 people): start of the Sunshine Coast & a major holiday centre

  • Pumicestone Passage inside Bribie enters Moreton Bay 44km south, providing small boat navigation, recreation, & ecological services

  • Decades of erosion have reduced the resilience of Bribie’s northern spit;

  • Two recent breaches: 2022 - TC Seth and 2025 - TC Alfred

  • Caloundra navigation channel closed

  • The Problem:Changing tide, wave, and sand conditions are reshaping the Passage; coastal erosion and inundation threats, rising and sand shoals make navigation hazardous.
