Chairman's email to MM members 24/11/24

Updated: Nov 26

Hi All,

We have had a relatively low profile lately, however there has been an enormous amount of work done in the background.

Plan Change 83 - The Rise opposite the Sanctuary. 380 lots.

We appealed the commissioners decision in the Environment Court, mainly focused on sediment run-off and storm-water to protect our harbour.

The developer agreed with all items in our submission prior to the hearing.

This has now been ratified by the Environment Court and will now be incorporated in the District Plan.

Plan Change 84 - The Hills between Mangawhai Central and Tara Rd. 600 Lots.

We  also appealed the Commissioners decision  to the Environment Court on basically identical issues as PC83.

The developer has sent us a lawyer's letter accepting our submission in full.

This is in the process of being ratified by the EC.

Mangawhai Central Update - The residential part has been purchased by an NZ company and it appears that the development will be much more aligned with what the community has fought for - fewer houses, more green spaces, cycle and walking tracks etc.

Rates - We continue to work with the council with some success to develop a more equitable rating system across the district. This is ongoing.

 Sustainable Mangawhai Project:

This is a major project for the Mangawhai community as it is crucial to have proven scientific information to ensure we get the buy-in from all stakeholders in the management of the harbour.

  1. The spit mapping study is complete and attached you will find the full Auckland University report, the executive summary, and a fuller summary and conclusions put together by Terry Hume and Phil McDermott attached. This study was funded by the MHRS. (40k)

  2. The catchment sedimentation study is complete to the draft report stage, and has not been reviewed by Terry and Phil. This was funded by the NRC. (40K)

  1. We have been successful in a 21k grant, via the MELA fund, to carry out the inundation study, which is key to progressing on the integrated modelling.  Tonkin and Taylor will carry this out based on the work they have already undertaken for the NRC. This is being funded by MELA (21k).

  1. The updated analysis of retail spending and the local economy report has been completed by Phil and is attached. This was funded by Mangawhai Opportunity Shop(5K)

  1. Yet to be funded for this stage are the cultural assessment ($?) and habitat mapping (circa $55K) both keys to understanding the impacts and future actions from the 3 studies above after overlaying SLR and climate change etc.

      Warm regards

      Doug
